German timeline 1806-2012
1806- The Confederation of Rhine and Napoleon.
Prussia and Frederick declared war on France after Napoleon established Rhine. The Prussians helped defeat Napoleon at Leipzig.
1815- German Confederation established.
The Congress of Vienna establishes the German Confederation of 39 independent states. This started to form Germany into a country with physical boundaries.
1862- Otto Von Bismarck.
In 1862, Otto Von Bismarck was appointed prime minister. This then led to the Franco-Prussian war and the capture of Paris.
1871- Wilhelm I was crowned the first Kaiser.
The crowning of Wilhelm I led to the German Empire uniting all of the German states. Germany prospered for many years while Wilhelm I was ruler.
1914- World War I
Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife of Austria-Hungry were assassinated which led to the start of World War I. Germany declared war on Russia and France while the United Kingdom declared war on Germany.
1919- Weimar Republic
In 1919, a national assembly met in Weimar to create a new German Constitution. This led to the creation of the Weimar Republic.
1933- Hitler
Hindenburg appointed Hitler chancellor of Germany. This started the prosecution of Jews.
1934- Der Fuhrer
Hitler appointed himself der fuhrer of Germany. The Nazi government began the Third Reich.
1938-40- Start of WWII
Hitler and the Nazis invade Austria, Czechoslovakia, and Poland. This started World War II. Germany then captured Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, and Luxembourg and the USA then allied with Russia and the UK to retaliate and stop Hitler.
1945-9- End of WWII and Division
Hitler commits suicide and the US and its allies force Germany to surrender. This cause a divided nation in Germany; one side being the US's new constitution and democracy (Federal Republic of Germany), while the East (German Democratic Republic) becomes communistic with a communistic constitution made by the Soviets.
1961-90- Berlin Wall
The Berlin wall was built by the Soviets in the middle of the city to separate the West from the East. In 1989, the ruler of the Soviet side agreed to take the wall down with the United States' help. In 1990, East and West Germany were re-unified.
1993- Maastricht Treaty
After Kohl unified Germany, they signed the Maastricht Treaty on the European Union. Kohl was re-elected as chancellor and Russian and allied troops finally leave Berlin.
2001-2012- Schroeder and Merkel
In 2001, Schroeder was elected chancellor and continued to improve both the East and West of Germany and the democracy. In 2005, the first woman chancellor was elected (Merkel), and continued to improve Germany and help it through the 2008 financial crisis.
